The Mountain between Us strikes as a survival movie mixed with romance and drama. The movie was directed by Hany Abu-Assad and written by J. Mills and Christ Wietz. Hany Abu-Assad has plenty of experience as a director and this movie shows impeccable filming techniques, beautiful locations and superb photography. Kate Winslet and Idris Elba have proven many times what they are both made of and they show a reliable chemistry on this film. Kate Winslet has the skill to take on any part that directors throw at her and she will be brilliant, however, I felt that she lacked a lot in this movie and some scenes felt forced from her. Idris Elba on the other hand seems to be improving part by part and has become one of the top tier actors right now and his part in The Mountain between Us clearly demonstrates it.
At first the movie develops in an airport where professional photographer Alex Martin, portrayed by the talented Kate Winslet and the neuro surgeon Ben Bass (Idris Elba), both miss their flight. Alex is on the way to her wedding and cannot be late and the same goes for Dr. Ben, who has a pending brain surgery. Nonetheless, Alex proves that she can handle things and books a private flight with a Vietnam veteran who used to be F-5 pilot. When they are up in the air a catastrophe happens and the pilot losses control of the aircraft, and from that moment one Alex and Ben start to rely on one another in order to survive. Miraculously they survive the plane crash, which left them stranded in the Colorado icy mountains, and they start to work together.
The movie revolves mainly around Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, but the couple did not show off too much chemistry on screen and some of their first scenes did not feel right. As always, Kate Winslet tries to demonstrate her skills as an actress but she failed to show real interest in her co-star Idris Elba. If it wasn’t for the beautiful and intelligent dog that the old pilot owned the movie would have felt completely dull. At first, the Dr. took care of the photographer, patched her up and tried to find a way out of the disaster they were into but without success. After having a close encounter with a cougar from which the dog tried to protect her, Alex realized that they had to move or otherwise they would die there.
Besides the beautiful location where it was filmed, the nice photography and the dog, this movie will not leave a lasting impression. It is predictable at some points, a lot of clichés and boring are two more flaws easily noticed in The Mountain Between Us. I thought I would never say this about a movie where Kate Winslet starred but I do not recommend it at all, unless you want to fall sleep before the finishing the first hour.
