Gemini Man is an action-drama film centered around retiring assassin, Henry Brogan. As he finishes up his 72nd, and final, job, he discovers a mysterious pursuer that seems to be able to predict his every move. The drama doubles when Brogan discovers that he is actually being hunted by a younger, faster version of himself. Brogan must then investigate who created this determined and lethal clone, nicknamed Junior, and why they want him dead.
Written by Andy Lee and starring Will Smith, this movie has seen mixed reviews since its October 2019 debut. It is rated PG-13 for violence and brief strong language, and has a run time of one hour and fifty-seven minutes. The greatest criticism is the, somehow, simultaneously predictable and inconsistent plot. While the story maintains some original elements, the pace of the plot revelation and the character development was lackluster, disappointing, and even jarring. There seemed to be several half hearted plots all stitched together. The relationship between Brogan and Junior is unwittingly cut short, leaving a powerful avenue of cinematic intimacy unexplored. The unoriginal dialogue left much to be desired. All of this combined to create quite the disappointment, considering the potential of the film.

With all this said, it has been praised for its cinematic execution. It displays a unique technological feat: convincingly de-aging Will Smith by several years combined with high film rate. However, Gemini Man couldn’t catch a break as the choice in film rate also sparked controversy. Some are saying it lacked authenticity, leaving characters and objects looking fake and flimsy. Others commended it as uniquely and visually thrilling. There can be no doubt, however, that there are some absolutely stunning shots and action sequences, including a noteworthy scene with Will Smith on a motorbike.
The saving element in this film really was the performance by Will Smith. Even in the midst of the cringe worthy dialogue, he pushed through with both versions of himself. There have been several movies in the past that have attempted the “acting with one’s self approach.” (I’m looking at you The Parent Trap.) There is always something kind of fascinating about this artistic choice. So, while the overall-review scale tipped toward the negatives, those faithful Will Smith lovers who enjoyed it, enjoyed it very much. This film may not be for everyone, but if you are a true Will Smith fan the double dose might just save it for you.
