Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood (2019), directed by Quentin Tarantino, tells the tale of Rick Dalton, burnt out TV star and his loyal, long-time stunt double, Cliff Booth. Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Booth (Brad Pitt) desperately try to break back into the film industry toward the end of golden-age Hollywood in the 1960’s. Originally having starred in a 50’s Western TV show, Dalton’s struggles to return to the film industry when he finds it basically unrecognizable from what he remembers. When the film star, Sharon Tate, and her director husband, Roman Polanski (Margot Robbie and Rafal Zawierucha), move in next to Dalton, he tries desperately to befriend them in an attempt to get in with the world of lights and cameras.
With a crazy cast of oddities and misfits, this throw back to old-timey Hollywood will baffle and delight you.
This film has a lot of crazy action and flashy movement, but some people found this less endearing and more just static and noise distracting from the lack of substance in the plot. Some found the narrative tedious and directionless, with many characters falling short of their potential in interest and development. Margot Robbie, a beloved modern actress, was said to be wasted in the roll of Sharon. She was given little to work with, resulting in a rather stale and undesirable character. With a disengaging story-line and shallow characters, it left little to be salvaged. The world was baffled to find a Tarantino movie so split for affection.
In spite of its shortcomings, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sports a number of charming, lovable qualities that people are talking about. Perhaps foremost of all of these is the film’s authentic lens of everyday life in the 1960s, more specifically its look into the time’s film industry. From old-fashioned cars to delightfully antiquated cityscapes and parlance, you never get tired of this adventure passing through the roaring sixties.
As Esquire’s Michael Hainey puts it, “what Tarantino gives you here is his strongest, greatest, most-moving (!) film in years, and in many respects a film that shows him growing as a director and writer. Everything you love and want in a Tarantino film is here, from the jukebox score to the great clothes to the swagger and suspense.”
Many viewers also comment on Tarantino’s lovable choice of music, and his uncanny ability to inspire his audience with nostalgia and engage with them on an emotional level.
