The movie is set a world where puppets and humans coexist. However, the puppets are treated as second-class citizens. Phil Phillips is the first puppet to become a cop in the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) but was later kicked off the force after killing an innocent puppet in front of his young daughter. He is later hired as a private investigator to take on a case involving the mysterious murders of puppets in LA. Reunited with former Partner Detective Connie Edwards (Mellissa McCarthy), both puppet and human would have to work together to resolve this mystery.
